The penultimate of Beethoven’s full-scale piano trios is often overshadowed by those that surround it, the Ghost and Archduke. Not fair this is a work of genius, too, if more poised and “Classical” than its neighbors. Poise also envelops Fauré’s C-minor Piano Quartet, alleviating the disillusionment he funneled into it after a failed love affair. A lyric, heartfelt gem by Aaron Jay Kernis, in a new arrangement by the composer for flute and strings, holds its own between these chamber classics.
