As our 25th Anniversary Season reaches its close we revisit a work we commissioned in 1988, Ned Rorem’s Bright Music (for flute, strings, and piano), and we offer a piano concerto by Mozart. A full concerto on a chamber music program? Well, yes this is one of several the composer said might be conveyed perfectly well by a piano with string quartet. One of music’s transcendent masterworks, Schubert’s Cello Quintet, brings this anniversary celebration to a glorious conclusion.

Thursday, August 14, 6:30-7:30 pm
Bridgehampton Presbyterian Church

The avant-garde trio Real Quiet offers a multimedia program of contemporary works you haven’t heard before. Cutting-edge premieres from Kaija Saariaho (a Finnish composer living in Paris), Huang Ruo (a Chinese composer living in New York), and the British composer James Aitchison offer a global glimpse of new music, with a newly-arranged trio by the late American composer Lou Harrison seeming almost ancient in this context.

CLASSICAL COMPOSURE
Wednesday, August 13, 7:30 pm
Bridgehampton Presbyterian Church

The penultimate of Beethoven’s full-scale piano trios is often overshadowed by those that surround it, the Ghost and Archduke. Not fair this is a work of genius, too, if more poised and “Classical” than its neighbors. Poise also envelops Fauré’s C-minor Piano Quartet, alleviating the disillusionment he funneled into it after a failed love affair. A lyric, heartfelt gem by Aaron Jay Kernis, in a new arrangement by the composer for flute and strings, holds its own between these chamber classics.

Program

BEETHOVEN
Piano Trio in E-flat Major, Op. 70, No. 2
AARON JAY KERNIS
Air for Flute and Strings (World premiere flute and string version)
FAURÉ
Piano Quartet in C Minor, Op. 15

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
Sunday, August 10, 6:30 pm
Bridgehampton Presbyterian Church

Special Guest: Roger Waters

Stravinsky crafted The Soldier’s Tale for slender resources just after World War One, but he made no concessions of quality in this narrated tale of a fiddling soldier in a Faustian struggle. Arvo Pärt’s Summa, which its composer arranged from an earlier choral work, provides a spiritual prelude to Mendelssohn’s daredevil Sextet, an early work that, notwithstanding its “late” opus number, he wrote at age 15.

Program

ARVO PÄRT
Summa for Violin, 2 Violas and Cello
MENDELSSOHN
Sextet in D Major for Strings and Piano, Op. 110
STRAVINSKY
The Soldier’s Tale - Narrated by Roger Waters

Artists

Stephen Williamson, Peter Kolkay, David Krauss, David Finlayson, Colin Jacobsen, Ayano Ninomiya, Nicholas Cords, Edward Arron, Donald Palma, Pedja Muzijevic, Ayano Kataoka, Roger Waters
