/> Bridgehampton Presbyterian Church

Our season comes to its close with a kaleidoscope of colorful vocal and instrumental combinations, beginning with a good-humored trio Haydn wrote during a visit to London. Of Brahms’ 200 lieder, the two performed here are the only ones where an obbligato instrument—here a rich-toned viola—joins the solo singer. Ravel’s Shéhérazade includes a poem about an enchanted flute, which naturally inspired him to write an obbligato flute part. Brahms used his tumultuous G-minor Piano Quartet as a calling card when he settled in his adopted city of Vienna. It did the trick. After a rehearsal, one of Vienna’s musical kingpins asserted, “This is Beethoven’s heir!”

Program

HAYDN<br

Rossini wrote his Duo for an affluent amateur cellist who wished to play with the renowned double bass virtuoso Domenico Dragonetti, and Mozart composed his Trio for his friend Anton Stadler, one of history’s first clarinet superstars. Our evening highlights those composers whose unorthodox love lives have proved endlessly fascinating: Tchaikovsky, a homosexual who poured out his heart in letters to a patroness who refused to meet him; Gershwin, a bachelor who enjoyed the devotion of fellow Broadway composer Kay Swift (married with children); and the complicated triangle of Robert and Clara Schumann and their protégé Johannes Brahms.
