Anthony McGill, clarinet
Anthony McGill, principal clarinetist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, has quickly earned the reputation of being one of classical music’s finest solo, chamber and orchestral musicians. Before joining the MET Orchestra in 2004, he served as associate principal clarinet of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Earlier this year, McGill had the honor of playing at President Obama’s Inauguration with Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma and Gabriela Montero which was broadcast worldwide. In addition to his orchestral career, McGill was a winner of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2000 and has appeared as a soloist with orchestras such as the Baltimore Symphony, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, and others. As a chamber musician, McGill has performed at the Marlboro Music Festival, Tanglewood, Music@Menlo, the Grand Teton Music Festival, Music from Angel Fire, among others. Having collaborated with artists such as Midori, Lang Lang, Yefim Bronfman and Gil Shaham, as well as world-renowned string quartets including the Brentano, Guarneri, Tokyo, Shanghai, Miami, Miró and Daedalus quartets, he is also a member of the Schumann Trio with violist Michael Tree and pianist Anna Polonsky. McGill attended the Interlochen Arts Academy and the Curtis Institute of Music, studying with Donald Montanaro, Richard Hawkins, Larry Combs, Julie DeRoche, David Tuttle and Sidney Forrest. McGill currently serves on the faculties of the Peabody Institute, Mannes College of Music and the Manhattan School of Music Pre-college Division.
