Artistic Director Marya Martin
The breadth of flutist Marya Martin’s musical career is remarkable. She gracefully balances the roles of chamber musician, festival director, soloist, teacher, and supporter of musical institutions. A prominent figure in the field of chamber music, Ms. Martin has appeared with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Chamber Music at the Y, The Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Music at Angel Fire, the New World Music Festival, Bravo! Colorado, and the Caramoor Festival.
In 1984, Ms. Martin founded the Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival, which is designed to offer distinctive programs in the intimate setting most appropriate for chamber music. Under her leadership as Artistic Director, the Festival has grown from a two-concert series with five musicians to an eleven-concert series, featuring as many as thirty-five artists. The Festival blends masterworks of the chamber repertoire with less familiar and newly discovered works by composers of all periods. The Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival has commissioned new works by many contemporary composers, including Ned Rorem, Bruce Adolphe, David Shohl, Bruce MacCombie, Kenji Bunch, Paul Moravec, and Mark O’Connor and is committed to giving the second performances of newly commissioned works.
Ms. Martin studied with Jean-Pierre Rampal and James Galway, and has appeared as soloist with the St. Louis Symphony, the Seattle Symphony, the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and the Brandenburg Ensemble, among others. In 1983 she toured her homeland of New Zealand performing duo concertos with Mr. Galway.
Ms. Martin was a top prize winner in the Walter W. Naumberg Competition, the Munich Competition, the Jean-Pierre Rampal International Competition, and the Young Concert Artists International Audition. She has recorded for Arabesque, Kiwi-Pacific Records, Musical Heritage Society, New World Records, Orion Master Recordings, and Well-Tempered Productions.
Dedicated to the new generation of musicians, Ms. Martin is on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music, and has given master classes at leading universities throughout the United States and New Zealand. In addition, she serves on the Board of Young Concert Artists, and is a jurist for their New York and Leipzig competitions. Ms. Martin previously served on the Board of the Miller Institute, the New School Concerts, and on the Nominating Committee for Chamber Music America.
